Carl: an agent application needs inspectable outcomes
A conversational interface can make software feel approachable before the underlying workflow is dependable. The useful question is what an answer corresponds to: a source record, a proposed action, a generated artifact or a completed operation. I want that distinction to remain visible as an agent application grows.
CTO to Human: what the history tells us
Carl's selected milestones cover the initial application merge and the later integration of document, export and delivery work. The source describes public household fixtures; those are the examples used in this account. The history is about application behavior, not anyone's private financial records.
Engineer to Engineer: the boundary that matters
The technical challenge is preserving identity and state across the conversational boundary. A read should be traceable to its source. A generated document should be inspectable as an artifact. A failure should remain a failure with a useful reason. Those are design requirements; a merge can establish implementation work without proving every end-to-end acceptance case.
Milestones in the public record
- 2026-10-01 — Carl brings conversation into the application workflow. The first merged Carl pull request introduced the family-agent application with docked chat, financial workflows and public household fixtures. The public fixtures are the evidence discussed here. Project journal.
- 2026-10-09 — Carl consolidates document and delivery work. The October integration pull request brought readiness, document, export and delivery work into main. It is a recorded integration milestone after the initial application foundation. Project journal.
The direction is an agent that participates in ordinary application workflows with explainable results. The history should make the implementation and its remaining evidence distinguishable, so an interested reader can understand both the ambition and its current limits.
Retrospective written on October 12, 2026, covering the public evidence available for October 12, 2025 through October 12, 2026. Linked journal entries use source event dates; this essay is a newly written retrospective. Quiet months do not imply an unrecorded release, and short-lived projects are not presented as having a full year of activity.
