Working across an organization’s repositories creates a mundane but persistent problem: getting a complete local workspace and keeping it current without losing control of individual repositories. GCLO makes that operation visible and repeatable.

CTO to Human: speed with an honest result

Git Clone Large Organizations discovers repositories for a GitHub organization or user, clones missing ones and updates existing ones. Its Windows desktop interface and scriptable CLI share the same engine. Each repository gets its own result, so one failure does not hide the progress of the others.

The important design choice is restraint. Updating a workspace should not silently decide how to resolve a developer’s divergent branch. A fast-forward-only policy makes the limit explicit and leaves that decision with the person responsible for the repository.

Engineer to Engineer: bounded work and recoverable failures

The documented engine uses paginated GitHub REST discovery through Octokit and bounded Parallel.ForEachAsync work. LibGit2Sharp performs cloning, fetches and fast-forward merges. A divergent local branch is reported as a failure rather than creating an automatic merge commit. Exceptions remain isolated per repository, with terminal success, failure or cancellation states.

Windows path constraints are treated as a recoverable workflow. Invalid paths are checked before checkout; the fetched Git data can be retained while an explicit resolution step materializes a safe working tree. Incomplete checkouts are marked so a later run can complete them instead of mistaking the directory for a healthy clone.

The repository documents the UI, CLI and release model, including checksum and provenance expectations. This journal will follow workspace recovery, shared application infrastructure and the tradeoffs behind organization-wide tooling.
